Exam Concessions
The examination boards in the UK have for some years now allowed a variety of concessions for candidates with specific learning difficulties if diagnosed and recommended by an educational psychologist.  With respect to candidates taking exams from Autumn 1999 the boards extended the availability of concessions to any candidate with a recognized learning difficulty.

The type of concession will very much depend upon the results of testing, interview with the young person and their normal method of working.  This will be undertaken by an educational psychologist.  The psychologist can recommend extra time, the use of a scribe,  the transcription of the candidates script (re written by someone who knows the candidates hand writing), use of a computer or a mixture of concessions.  The aim is to allow as far as is possible the candidate to operate on a fair and level playing field, not to give advantage to candidates.

In the UK concessions assessments can be undertaken by the schools allocated educational psychologist.  However, pressure of work often leads to only the very serious cases being assessed and offered concessions.  Some children who have parents that can afford it are privately assessed and these children are usually offered concessions.   The costs for this can vary greatly, depending upon how much previous assessment has been undertaken.  For a fresh case £150 would be very good value, if previous testing has taken place updating should be possible and the cost could come down considerably.
